Question

Why are plasma and Bose - Einstein condensate considered 4 and 5 States of matter? After all these are gases which behave very differently when high energy and very low temperature are applied to them respectively.

Solution

Dear student,

1. Plasma is the 4th state of matter because it is the most abundant state of matter in the universe. It is a hot ionized gas consisting of an equal number of positively and negatively charged ions. They are also strongly influenced by electric and magnetic field.
2. Bose-Einstein condenstate is the 5th state of matter. It is formed when bosons are cooled to temperature of 0 kelvin. Under this condition a large fraction of atoms come to lowest quantum state, at this point quantun effect becomes almost zero.
