Question

Why are pressure and volume inversely related?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The ideal gas laws give us a relationship between the pressure(P), volume(V), temperature(T), number of moles(n), and Universal gas constant(R).
  2. This can be written as
    PV=nRT
  3. Such an ideal gas equation is obtained by many ideal gas equations that followed certain laws.
  4. Boyle's law: According to this law, when pressure is being applied to the ideal gas then it is inversely proportional to the volume.
  5. When the temperature is constant, then the product of pressure and volume is also constant.
  6. Boyle's law can be mathematically represented as follows:
    P1V; where P is the pressure and V is the volume.
  7. It can also be represented as P1V1=P2V2=Constant, n and T being constant.
