Solution

Trachea :

  • The trachea is a tube that starts under the larynx (voice box) and leads to the two lungs. It is about 4 inches long and is also called a windpipe.
  • The trachea is supported by C-shaped rings made of cartilage known as cartilage rings which protect the trachea from collapse and injury.
  • The trachea is also lined with mucous secreting cells that make up the mucous gland, which secretes a sticky aqueous secretion called mucous that prevents the entry of foreign particles like dust etc., into the trachea and lungs.
