Question

Why are solids incompressible?

Open in App
Solution

  • Solids have a strong intermolecular force of attraction between their molecules thus the molecules are tightly packed.
  • There are negligible intermolecular spaces between the molecules so the molecules can not move freely.
  • Thus the particles can only vibrate at their mean position but can not move.
  • Therefore solids cannot be compressed.
