Question

Why are sound waves called mechanical waves?

Open in App
Solution

Mechanical waves:

  1. The disturbance taking place in a material medium for its propagation is called a mechanical wave.
  2. Sound is produced due to vibration and requires a material medium for its propagation.
  3. The molecules in a medium vibrate in order for sound to travel. In places where there are no molecules, such as vacuum, sound cannot travel.
  4. Hence, sound waves are called mechanical waves.
