Question

Why are testes located outside the abdominal cavity?

Solution

Testes:

  1. Testes are the primary reproductive organs in human males. These are paired structures and produce the male gametes (sperms) and the male sex hormone (testosterone).
  2. Testes are located outside the abdominal cavity in a sac-like structure called the scrotum because the temperature required for the formation of sperm is lower than body temperature. Spermatogenesis is inhibited at a temperature above 40° C.
  3. The temperature of the scrotum is 2° C to 3° C lower than the body temperature, which allows the proper development and formation of sperms.
