Why are the Arabari forests of Bengal known to be a good example of conserved forest?

Arabari forests:

  1. Arabari forest is located in the district of West Bengal called Midnapur.
  2. The forest occupies an area of 1272 hectares with majorly Sal trees.
  3. In 1972 it was observed by the forest department of West Bengal that the Sal forest is highly degraded and needs to be conserved.

Arabari forests are a good example of the conserved forest:

  1. For the recovery of the forest, the officials came up with the idea of involving local people living nearby the forest. Officials offered them the authority to utilize the forest products such as fodder and firewood at minimal prices. Still, in return, they were supposed to look after the forest and help reestablish it as it used to be.
  2. The officer offered employment to the people in silviculture and harvesting operations along with using 25% of the final goods produced in the forest.
  3. This was a great step towards saving the forest with the help of the local people as it was reestablishes with the thickness and greenery within a span of 10 years. Thus it is known to be a good example of a conserved forest.
