Solution
In an event such as the high jump when an athlete jumps from a certain height, he gains certain momentum during the downfall.
If an athlete falls directly on hard strata the impact time will be less and the rate of change of momentum will be sudden which will cause injury to the athlete.
So, the cushioned bed or sand bed is used during the downfall of an athlete so that the impact time increases and the rate of change of momentum won't suddenly fall to zero.
