Question

Why are the chemical properties of isotopes same but not the physical properties?

Open in App
Solution

Isotopes are elements with the same atomic number but different atomic mass.
They have similar chemical properties because valency and the number of valence electrons are the same.
They differ in physical properties because their atomic masses are different because of the difference in the number of neutrons.
Hence Mass number helps in determining the physical properties while atomic number helps in determining the chemical properties
