Why are the eggs usually large sized cells?

Open in App
Solution

An egg is an organic vessel containing the zygote in which an animal embryo develops until it can survive on its own., at which time the animal hatches. The egg cytoplasm contains nutritional reserve, in the form of yolk which is rich in proteins, lipids and polysaccharides. In eggs, zygote develops into large animals outside mothers body, yolk accounts for more than 95% of the volume of the cell. The surface to volume ratio between the yolk and the inner side of eggshell or plasma membrane is maintained for easy respiration and storage of waste products of developing embryo. Therefore the eggs are large cells.
