Question

Why are the gases highly compressible?

Open in App
Solution

Gas:

  • Gas is a state of matter which has only definite mass but no definite shape and volume.
  • It takes up the shape of the container.
  • The molecules can movable throughout the container

e.g. — Carbondioxide(CO2), Oxygen(O2), etc.

  • The gases are highly compressible because the molecules can movable throughout the container, have move amount of free space and less dense than other states of matter.
  • In otherwords, the intermolecular space between the gas particles is very large as compared to the intermolecular space between the liquid and solid particles.
  • Hence, gases are more compressible.
