Why are the participating atoms of a coordinate bond called the donor and the acceptor?

A coordinate bond is formed by the overlap of a completely filled orbitals containing a lone pair of electrons with as empty orbital of another atom.
Hence, the atom which donates the electron pair is called as donor and the atom which accepts the electron pair is called as acceptor.
