Question

Question 3
Why are the small numbers of surviving tigers a cause of worry from the point of view of genetics?

Open in App
Solution

Since the tiger population is decreasing sharply, the expanse of its genetic pool also gets affected. This has a limiting effect on the variations that can be seen in the genetic makeup of the tigers. This has a serious fall-out. For example- If a disease spreads in the tiger population, it might wipe out its entire population leaving no survivors meaning that the existing tigers would get a slim chance to survive if there is a major outbreak of a disease. It might lead to their complete extinction.
