Question

Why are the stomata in most plants more numerous on the lower surface of a leaf instead of being on the upper surface ?

Open in App
Solution

We know that stomata are the openings on the leaves which function to facilitate transpiration and exchange of gaseous material in and out of the leaf.

We also know that the dorsal part of the leaf that is the shiny part faces direct sunlight. With its stomatal pores open for gaseous exchange, the intensity of heat would accelerate the loss of water through rapid evaporation. This would result in rapid dehydration of the plant and finally lead to it's own death.

Hence to avoiid such eventuality, the stomatal pores are all located on the ventral side of the leaf, the side that faces the ground, away from the direct rays of the sun.
