Why are tips and edges of cutting and piercing tools made sharp?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The pressure acting on a surface area A by a force F is given by: P= F/A.
  2. So, the pressure acting on a small surface area is large as compared to that on a large surface area.
  3. Therefore cutting objects becomes easier with sharp edges(small surface area).
  4. Therefore, tools meant for cutting and piercing always have sharp edges so that they may produce large pressure to cut things easily.
