Why are variables called so?

In mathematics, a variable (changeable) is a symbol and placeholder for a quantity that may change. In particular, a variable represents a number that may change. So that's why we called it variables.

For example: $2\mathrm{x}+4$ in this expression value of $\mathrm{x}$ may change.
