Question

At high atmospheric humidity, why is the rate of transpiration low?

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration:

  1. The evaporation of water from the plants is called transpiration.
  2. It occurs in the leaves and sometimes in the stem.
  3. Water balance is maintained by transpiration.
  4. It also brings down the temperature of the plants.

Relationship between humidity and rate of transpiration:

  1. At high atmospheric humidity, transpiration is low.
  2. This is because the rate of transpiration is directly proportional to the saturation deficit.
  3. It is dependent on the gradient of vapor pressure.
  4. Thus, the higher the humidity, the lower the rate of transpiration.
