Question

Why does auxin move away from the light?

Open in App
Solution

Auxin:

  1. Auxin is a plant growth regulator.
  2. It is found at the tip of the stems.
  3. It promotes flowering and stems elongation.
  4. It prevents fruits and leaves from dropping at early stages.
  5. It also induces parthenocarpy.

Phototropism:

  1. Unequal distribution of auxin causes phototropism.
  2. It causes the plant growth either away or towards the light, based on which part receives light.
  3. Auxins are present in higher quantities on the shaded side of a stem.
  4. Since auxins promote stem elongation, the shaded part grows taller.
  5. Due to one side being taller than the other, it bends over to the other side.
  6. The other side is the direction of the light hence, auxins cause the plant shoot to bend towards the light.
