Fringe Width in YDSE
Why are the f...
Question
Why are the fringes straight and parallel?

Solution
In a wedge-shaped film, each fringe is the locus of points of equal thickness in the film.
The fringes are straight because their shape depends on how the thickness of the air film enclosed varies.
It is parallel to the edge of the wedge.
Thus, this is the reason for fringes that why look straight and parallel.

Two straight and narrow parallel slits 0.8 mm apart are illuminated using a monochromatic light source. A screen placed at a distance of 100 cm is used to obtain fringes. It is found that the distance between consecutive fringes is 0.5 mm. Determine the wavelength of light.

In young experiment if two straight narrow parallel slits 3 mm apart are illuminated with monochromatic light of wavelength 5900 x 10 (raise to power minus 8)cm. Fringes are observed at a distance of 3m from slits. Find width of fringes??
Q.
A thin slice is cut out of a glass cylinder along a plane parallel to its axis. The slice is placed on a flat glass platewith the curved surface downwards. Monochromatic light is incident normally from the top. The observedinterference fringes from the combination do not follow on of the following statements.(A) The fringes are straight and parallel to the length of the piece.(B) The line of contact of the cylindrical glass piece and the glass plate appears dark.(C) The fringe spacing increases as we gooutwards.(D) The fringes are formed due to the interference of light rays reflected from the curved surface of the Cylindrical piece and the top surface of the glass plate.
