Question

Why boiling point of cis isomer is greater than trans isomer?

Open in App
Solution

The difference in the boiling point betweencisandtransisomers arises due to presence of polar bonds incisisomer.

Incisisomers there are dipole-dipole forces which add to the London dispersion forces (A weak inter-molecular force arising from polarization) and raise the boiling point, while in the case oftransisomers the net dipole moment is zero that’s whytransisomers have lower boiling point thancisisomers.
