Question

Why building have wide foundation

Open in App
Solution

Solution:

Increase of surface area decreases the amount of pressure acting on an object. The buildings have wide foundations to decrease the pressure acting on the building due to its weight. Increased pressure may lead to instability of the building.

Buildings have wide foundations for safety because if the area on which the thrust acts is more, then the pressure exerted by the building will be less. The foundation will be able to balance the weight of the building. Thrust is the force acting perpendicular on the surface.

Buildings are massive structures which exerts tremendous pressure on the ground and likely to sink. To avoid sinking their foundations are made wide, so that pressure on the ground decreases.
