Question

Why can a transverse wave not be produced in gas?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Transverse waves travel in the form of crests and troughs involving a change in the shape of the medium.
  2. The molecules of gas stay far away from each other as compared to solid and liquid so, they can not be rigid in nature.
  3. In other words, gases do not possess the elasticity of shape, therefore, transverse waves cannot be produced in gases.
