Question

Why can cytokinesis not occur in plant cells the same way as it occurs in animal cells?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

In animal cells, there is formation of a cleavage furrow,in the middle of the cell that is about to divide. This furrow gradually deepens and constricts the centre of the cell until the membrane touches and fuses and totally divides the two daughter cells. This cleavage furrow is controlled by cytoskeletal elements.

In plant cells, there is a cell wall that needs to be split up, which is absent in animal cells. Here, the dictyosome(golgi apparatus) in plant cells, produces vesicles that move gradually and line up in the middle of the cell. Then they fuse with one another until the formation of a continuous cell plate. The vesicles and cell plate thus formed contain all the components of a plasma membrane and a cell wall .
