Why can graphite not be used in jewellery in place of diamonds?

Solution

Following are the reasons why graphite is not used in making jewellery :

  1. It is very soft, and brittle in nature and forms a hexagonal layered structure which makes it slippery.
  2. It cannot be moulded like gold and silver and does not have ductility.
  3. It is dull grey in colour and does not possess lusture which is the desired characteristic in jewellery.
