Question

Why can not HCl be dried over quicklime or P4O10.

Solution

  • When an acid reacts with a base it will produce salt and water. This is called a neutralization reaction.
  • HCl can not be dried over quicklime CaO or P4O10 because HCl is acidic in nature whereas CaO is basic in nature so if we use CaO for drying, both will react to form a salt.

2HCl(aq)+CaO(s)CaCl2(aq)+H2O(l)12HCl(aq)+P4O10(s)4POCl3(aq)+6H2O(l)

Hence, HCl can not be dried over quicklime or P4O10.
