Question

Why can't carbon form 4 covalent bond with carbon atom, like carbon double bond and triple bond

Open in App
Solution

The 4 covalent bond is energetically not favourable. To form the 4 covalent bonds , two carbon atom needs to come very closer. As they come closer , the system become highly unstable because of repulsion of the electrons. Hence it is not possible for carbon to make 4 covalent bonds.
