Question

Why cannot aluminium metal be obtained by the reduction of aluminium oxide with coke?

Open in App
Solution

Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) cannot be reduced by coke because it is a highly stable oxide and aluminium has a strong affinity for oxygen. Hence, Al2O3 has to be reduced to Al electrolytically.
