Question

Why cannot we store silver nitrate solution in copper vessel?

Open in App
Solution

  • We cannot store silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution in a copper (Cu) vessel because the reactivity of copper is high than the silver metal as given in the reactivity series which results in the displacement of silver by copper.
  • Displacement Reaction taking place in the container:

Cu(s)+2AgNO3(aq)Cu(NO3)2(aq)+2Ag(s)(Copper)(Silvernitrate)(Coppernitrate)(Silver)

  • Here, copper displaces silver from the silver nitrate solution and forms the copper nitrate[Cu(NO3)2] and hence We cannot store Silver nitrate in a Copper vessel.
