Question

Why can't bryophytes grow tall?

Open in App
Solution

Bryophytes:

  1. Bryophytes are referred to as the amphibians of the plant kingdom.
  2. They can live on soil but for sexual reproduction they have to be dependent on water.
  3. They do not possess vascular tissues (xylem and phloem) that function in the conduction of food, water, and minerals.
  4. Due to the lack of vascular tissues, water and nutrients cannot be transported to long distances so they can not grow tall.
  5. They do not have true roots, leaves, and stems which are essential in providing structural support to tall plants.
  6. Example - mosses, liverworts.
