Question

Why carbon monoxide is harmful for us?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin to form carboxy-haemoglobin that is 300 times more stable than the oxygen-haemoglobin complex. In blood when the concentration of carboxy-haemoglobin reaches 3-4 percent the oxygen carrying capacity of blood is reduced. Hence, the tissue become oxygen deficient. This can lead to unconsciousness and ultimately death.
