Question

Why carbonate ion is not a chelating ligand ??

Open in App
Solution

Dear student, chelating ligand is the ligand which donates or form coordination bond to central metal ion through more than one atom at the same time .they form a chelating rings forming our complex stable. Carbonate ion donot do so because it have angle of 120° between carbon oxygen bonds.so it becomes difficult for them but in some cases when size of metal is appricablly large it can act as chelating ligand . And also when there two metals in complex it can form bond with both the metal atom at the same time acting as bidentate ligand. Regards.
