Why cellular organisation and consciousness are considered as defining features of living organisms?

Living organisms specially multicellular organisms have cells as the basic structural and functional unit of life. The cells together form tissues and tissues form organs, organ system with well developed division of labour. Similarly they have well developed central nervous system including brain and spinal cord which allows the living organisms to respond very quickly to internal and external stimuli.
