Question

Why CO23 ion cannot be represented by single Lewis structure? How can it be best represented?

Open in App
Solution

It cannot be represented by a single Lewis structure since it exhibits resonance. The electrons are shifted from one atom to the other to distribute the charge evenly on all atoms as that is more stable than two atoms have 1 negative charge each. Hence it can be represented by the three resonance structures.
