Question

Why commonly used silicon diode will not emit light when it is forward biased

Open in App
Solution

Dear student, This is because in silicon diodes there is an indirect band gap. In order to emit light there must be a direct band gap. During forward biasing this indirect bad gap increases further which ultimately hinders the light emission. Regards
