Question

Why covalent compounds decomposes on heating

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Dear Student,

Covalent bond is a type of chemical bond where two atoms are linked to each other by the sharing of two or more electrons. This sharing outcomes in a stable balance of attractive and repulsive forces between those atoms. Covalent bonds are very strong. A very strong inter-molecular interactions, the melting temperature can become very high. When heated at atmospheric pressure, it decomposes before they can melt. But adequate energy is essential to break the covalent bonds inside the compound and release the free radicals that ultimately react with the oxidising agent.
