Question

Why Cu+2 is more stable than Cu+ ?

Open in App
Solution

Cu2 + electron configuration:1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d9
Cu+ electron configuration:1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10

From the electronic configuration, it is observed that Cu+ is more stable thanCu2+ due to completely filled d-orbital.

However in aqueous solutions, it is the opposite.
