Question

Why desert plants have thicker epidermis?

Open in App
Solution

Desert plants face xerophytic (dry) conditions.
They need to conserve water and prevent loss of water.
Greater the thickness of epidermis, thicker will be the layer of cuticle as epidermal cells form the cuticle.
Cuticle prevents loss of water due to its waxy and water-resistant nature.
Therefore, desert plants have thicker epidermis in order to prevent loss of water in dry conditions.
