Why are Deuteromycetes called imperfect fungi?

Open in App
Solution

Deuteromycetes:

  1. Deuteromycetes are called imperfect fungi because only their vegetative and asexual phases are known.
  2. When their sexual phases were known, they were moved to a different class - ascomycetes and basidiomycetes.
  3. When linkage was discovered, fungi were correctly identified and moved out of Deuteromycetes.
  4. Deuteromycetes only produce asexually through conidia.
  5. Their mycelium is septate and branched.
  6. Example - Alternaria, Colletotrichum, Trichoderma
