Question

Why diazonium salts do not show positive Lassaigne's test for nitrogen?

Open in App
Solution

Diazonium salts are stable only at low temperatures (050oC). At higher temperatures, they decompose to give nitrogen. If nitrogen is lost, then NaCN will not be formed and hence the compound will not give positive test for nitrogen. Thus, diazonium salts do not give Lassaigne's test
