a. Afghanistan became independent under the strong leadership of Ahmed Shah Abdali, who had invaded India number of times, taking advnatage of the weaknesses of the mughals
b. Abdali was able to amass a lot of wealth .
c. In 1761, his army conquered Punjab and sought to establish control over Delhi.
d. It was during this time that Maratahs had grown in power and influence, and had extended their influence over Delhi
e. Thus the war between them became inevitable

f. The third battle of Panipat thus took place in 1761 between ​ Ahmad Shah Abdali and the Marathas led by Balaji Baji Rao, which led to the victory of Ahmed Shah
g. This declined the influence of the Marthas over North India.
