  • The War of Kalinga was one of the bloodiest wars fought ever
  • Though a much smaller state, Kalinga put up a stiff resistance till the very end.
  • The war killed about two lakh people, one lakh each from either side.
  • Although he won, the extent of destruction caused, numbed Ashoka and he blamed himself for the catastrophe.
  • He therefore, decided not to wage a war again because of the indescribable miseries it brought upon.
