Aurangzeb summoned Guru Har Rai Ji when he suspected the Guruji of helping his estranged brother, Dara Shikoh. The Guruji did not go. Instead, he sent his son Baba Ram Rai to meet the emperor. When Aurangzeb asked Ram Rai for clarification on the meaning of the word 'Musalman' (Muslim) in a Bani, Ram Rai replied that the word was incorrectly used instead of 'beiman' (dishonest person). He did this to please Aurangzeb who was satisfied with his answer. However, this angered Guru Har Rai Ji, and he excommunicated his son. He passed on the Guruship to his youngest son Guru Har Krishan Ji.
