(i) Mahatma Gandhi was dressed like a poor man to show his unity with the socially and economically deprived Indians. The symbolic strength of Gandhi's dress lay In its simplicity.
(ii) He used it to show his support for the poor, to encourage the boycott of British goods, and to erase religious differences end class distinctions. Mahatma Gandhi used cloth as a symbolic weapon against the British rule.
(iii) He adopted this particular clothing as he wanted to lead a simple and poor life style like most of his countrymen, especially poor peasants who could not afford anything more than a loincloth and a chaddar.
(iv) It was also a protest against the British exploitation of Indian resources.
