1) Against Rowlatt Act in 1919, Gandhiji launched nationwide satyagraha movement.
2) This Act had been passed so hurriedly despite the united opposition of Indian members and gave the government enormous powers like to repress political activities, and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years.
3) Even Rallies were organized in various cities.
4) Workers went on strike in railway workshops, and nearby shops closed down.
5) Alarmed by the popular upsurge, and scared that lines of communication such as telegraph and railways would be disrupted.
6) The British administration decided to clamp down on nationalists.
7) And on 10th April, the police in Amritsar fired upon a peaceful procession provoking widespread attacks on banks, post offices and railway stations.
8) Martial law was imposed.
9) General Dyer took command.
10) After the brutal killing and massacre of Jallianwala Bagh, violence spreaded nationwide.
11) And as a result, Mahatma Gandhi called off this Rowalatt Satyagraha movement
