Why did man feel the need to have permanent home ? How did the settlements start growing?

Earlier, human beings moved from place to place in search of food. So they lived in caves or trees. But when they began to grow crops, they felt the need of permanent home. Settlements start growing with the beginning of agriculture by human beings. These settlements mainly developed near river due to availability of water and fertile soil.
