Nepal became a monarchy in 1768 when Prithvi Narayan Shah was crowned the King of Nepal. The monarchy was established because it was Prithvi Narayan Shah who created the modern nation of Nepal. At that time, the present region of Nepal was divided into various small kingdoms. Shah defeated or won the allegiance of all those small rulers and created Nepal as his kingdom.
