he effects of print culture were not welcomed by all sections of the society. There were apprehensions that easy accuses to printed material would spread rebellious and irreligious thoughts. This was especially the case with religious authorities and monarchs.
In Europe, the Roman Church imposed severe controls and restrictions over publishers and booksellers in 1558 and started maintain an Index of Prohibited Books.
In India, in 1820 the Calcutta Supreme Court passed regulations to control the freedom of press. This was especially directed to Englishmen who were critical of the British rule.
