why did the Khasis of Meghalaya rise in revolt

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

The British gained possession of the Brahmaputra Valley after defeating the Burmese. They planned to link up this area with Sylhet by constructing a link road passing through the entire Khasis dominated region. The British began to forcefully endorse the Khasis as labourers in construction. This enraged the Khasis who organised a revolt against the British under the leadership of Tiruth Singh, a Khasis chief. This revolt continued for four years and finally suppressed by the British.
