Question

Why did the two kingdom classification fail?

Open in App
Solution

Two kingdom classification:

  1. To classify life on earth, two kingdom classification was an early attempt.
  2. It was given by Linnaeus.
  3. He classified organisms into two kingdoms - Plantae and Animalia.
  4. However, with the discovery of more species and organisms, it became harder to fit organisms under just these two classes.
  5. For example, fungi were placed under the kingdom Plantae in the starting, but they more closely resembled animals.
  6. Other organisms like lichens could not be placed under the kingdom Plantae or Animalia because of their different nature.
  7. Therefore, a new system of classification was needed and the two-kingdom system of classification was discarded.
