Why did water pipes burst in cold?

Water contracts at high temperature and expands at low temperature.
In winters the temperature is less, so water expands but in summers the temperature is high, so water contracts.
In winter, when the temperature starts falling down and reaches 0^oC, the density of water drops suddenly and water in pipelines expands causing them to burst.
